Content Areas Overview
ELA/ Reading
English/Language Arts The curriculum is comprised of the Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE) and focuses on the integration of vocabulary, literature, reading strategies, writing, oral language skills, research and grammar. Reading instruction teaches students to use cognitive strategies before, during and after reading to help them monitor their understanding and evaluate the author’s presentation of ideas. A thematic approach allows students and teachers to work collaboratively to explore literary and informational text. As part of the writing curriculum, students respond to texts, answer questions about a text, analyze exemplars from different types/genres of writing, and emulate the elements, features, and characteristics they identified as most effective in their own writing. Students receive writing instruction through a writing workshop framework that includes a mini-lesson, small groups, and individual conferences. They are provided direct, explicit instruction in writing skills and processes need to create a text including the writing process, paragraph and sentence construction skills, text structures used for writing, and word processing and other technology-related skills. In the Middle School English and Language Arts curriculum, there are three levels for every grade: On, Advanced, or Accelerated. The advanced course consists of the on-grade level standards and is differentiated by the complexity of the text as well as the inclusion of some standards from the next grade level. The accelerated course consists entirely of the standards one or more years above the assigned grade level.
Reading Students who are not taking world language during sixth, seventh and eighth grade are scheduled for a reading course. Students receive Tier 1 reading instruction on reading strategies, vocabulary, and comprehension. Students also receive small group instruction on identified reading needs. This course focuses on increasing student motivation, volume, and stamina in reading a variety of text as well as providing students with effective reading strategies and behaviors. Keys to developing an effective reading process include:
• Using reading skills with varied content (literary and informational).
• Applying reading strategies consistently before, during and after reading for active comprehension and
• Selecting the most appropriate reading strategy to use while reading complex text
Math
Math courses are designed to enhance student learning and achievement. Georgia standards emphasize critical thinking, problem-solving, and real-world applications. They ensure students build a solid foundation in key mathematical concepts throughput middle school.
The standards are organized using domains. Each course reflects what students should know in relation to a specific domain at a specific grade level.
At Haynes Bridge, we offer On- level and Advanced courses in each grade level. We also offer Enhanced Algebra, Algebra, and Geometry.
Science
Georgia middle school science focuses on building a strong foundation in Earth, Life, and Physical Sciences through inquiry-based learning. Students explore concepts like the solar system, Earth's systems, matter, energy, and living organisms. The curriculum emphasizes three-dimensional learning, integrating science content with science and engineering practices and crosscutting concepts according to the Georgia Department of Education.
Georgia Standards of Excellence in Science focuses on 3-Dimensional learning which incorporates science content, crosscutting concepts, and science & engineering practices. Fulton County believes every aspect of science education encountered by students should enhance their understanding of science; enabling them to become environmentally, scientifically, and technologically literate citizens.
At each grade level, content core ideas are integrated with science and engineering practices and crosscutting concepts. The science and engineering practices, content, and crosscutting concepts are used throughout K-12 science courses and build towards a progressively deeper understanding of the dimensions as students' progress through the years. Hands-on, student-centered, and inquiry-based approaches are the emphasis of instruction.
Key areas covered in Georgia middle school science:
- Earth Science: Students learn about the solar system, Earth's structure, water cycle, weather, and climate. They also explore topics like plate tectonics, rocks, and minerals.
- Life Science: This includes the study of cells, body systems, genetics, heredity, evolution, and the interdependence of life.
- Physical Science: Students delve into the nature of matter, energy, forces, motion, electricity, and magnetism.
Inquiry-based learning:
The curriculum encourages hands-on investigations, exploration, and problem-solving to promote deeper understanding.
- Three-dimensional learning:
Students integrate science content with scientific and engineering practices (like planning investigations, analyzing data) and crosscutting concepts (like cause and effect, systems).
Specific examples of topics covered in each grade:
Grade 6: Focuses on Earth Science, including the solar system, Earth's structure, water, and dynamic Earth.
Grade 7: Covers Life Science, including cells, body systems, genetics, and evolution.
Grade 8: Explores Physical Science, including matter, energy, forces, and motion.
Overall, the goal of Georgia's middle school science curriculum is to equip students with the scientific knowledge and skills necessary for high school and beyond, fostering a lifelong appreciation for science. according to the Georgia Department of Education
Social Studies
Social Studies is an important subject that helps students understand the world and how people interact within it. It combines history, geography, economics, and civics to explore different cultures, significant events, and the way governments function. In middle school, you’ll learn about major historical developments, the diversity of societies, and how economic systems work. This subject encourages critical thinking and helps you understand your role as a responsible citizen. Ultimately, Social Studies prepares you to engage thoughtfully with the world and make informed decisions about current issues.
Utilizing our book from Gallopade as a physical textbook, alongside the interactive tools available in the online version, enhances the learning of our students. The physical book provides a solid foundation, while the online resources promote engagement and critical thinking. These tools encourage you to analyze information, ask questions, and draw connections between past and present events. Through the use of this book, it allows us more time to find additional resources that challenge our students and push them to their fullest potential. We use various tools that reach all learning styles whether it be physical, visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and more.

World Languages Goals
The goal of the Fulton County Schools World Languages department is to guide students along their Path to Proficiency as they work to master the Georgia Performance Standards for Classical and Modern Languages, and to become culturally aware global citizens. Specific proficiency targets for the middle school levels fall in the Novice and Intermediate-Low levels of the ACTFL Proficiency Scale.
For Modern Languages, these standards consist of “The 5 Cs”:
- Communication – Students will engage in conversations, understand and interpret spoken and written language, and present information on a variety of topics.
- Culture – Students will learn about target culture products, practices and perspectives.
- Connections – Students will connect aspects of their target language learning with information acquired in other subject areas such as math, science, social studies, English and the arts.
- Comparisons – Students will demonstrate an understanding of the nature of language and culture, making comparisons between those of the target language and their own.
- Communities – Students will find and engage in the target language outside of the school environment and show evidence of building a life-long skill for their own personal enjoyment and enrichment.
At Haynes Bridge, we offer a diverse and solid curriculum in French, German, and Spanish.
We also offer Dual Language Immersion in Spanish starting in 6th grade.
